Funäsdalen – the heart of western Härjedalen
Funäsdalen is a vibrant mountain village with deep roots and a strong identity. Here, history, culture, and modern outdoor life meet in a unique combination. With just over 800 inhabitants, Funäsdalen is the central hub of western Härjedalen – and a gathering point for both locals and visitors alike.
A mountain village with heritage and soul
Funäsdalen has been inhabited since the 18th century and grew up around agriculture, fishing, and reindeer herding. The proximity to Sami mountain areas and the Norwegian border has shaped both the culture and its people. The living Sami heritage is present here, with the active Tännäs sameby, and the Fjällmuseet tells the story of both Sami and Swedish mountain history.
The modern Funäsdalen
Today, Funäsdalen is a year-round mountain village with much to offer:
Shops & services: You’ll find grocery stores, sports shops, pharmacies, Systembolaget, a health center, and other community services.
Restaurants & cafés: Several great eateries featuring local produce, pizzerias, mountain taverns, and bakeries.
Accommodation: Everything from hotels to mountain cabins and hostels, both in the village and nearby areas.
School & preschool: For locals, there is a fully functioning everyday life with a school, preschool, and sports facilities.
Culture: Fjällmuseet is the centerpiece for stories about mountain life history. Concerts, lectures, and exhibitions are also arranged here.
Church & traditions: The wooden church from the 1920s stands beautifully by the lake and is an important place for the village.
Everyday life close to the mountain
Funäsdalen offers a rare combination: small-town amenities right in a mountain setting. In winter, the village serves as a base camp for skiing, both in the lift system and cross-country trails. In summer, hiking, cycling, and fishing take center stage. The village sits right on Funäsdalssjön, and the cable car up to Funäsdalsberget offers panoramic views of the entire mountain world.
Funäsdalen is a place to live — or to return to, again and again.
Here, the mountains are never far away, yet everything you need is close at hand. Whether you live here year-round, own a cabin, or are just visiting – Funäsdalen is a center with soul, history, and mountain vitality.
